The Grand Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, ensures a constant supply of chilled, germ-free air to worshippers by subjecting the air to rigorous purification and sanitization nine times a day using advanced ultraviolet technology.

The Grand Mosque is equipped with an impressive air conditioning system boasting a cooling capacity of 155,000 tons. This exceptional capacity is made possible through the utilization of two of the largest cooling stations globally, Ajyad and Shamiya. The Shamiya station, which is located 900 meters from the mosque, contributes a substantial 120,000 tons of cooling power. Meanwhile, the Ajyad station, situated 500 meters away, has a production capacity of 35,000 tons.

The refrigeration units at two stations work to cool the water to an optimal temperature of 4 to 5 degrees Celsius. Once cooled, the water is transported through a complex network of pipes to the Grand Mosque. At the mosque, the water goes through a process within the mechanical air handling units, where heat exchange takes place. The result is purified and cooled air that is then distributed throughout the entire mosque. The air handling units have recently undergone a thorough renewal and upgrade, with the agency replacing heat exchangers and air filters to ensure consistent air purification.

The intricate purification process involves multiple phases. It commences by drawing in natural air from the Grand Mosque using highly efficient and technologically advanced filters. These filters act as a protective barrier, preventing the entry of dust particles and minute contaminants into the air conditioning environment. Subsequently, the air undergoes thorough sanitization using ultraviolet rays to guarantee it reaches the prayer areas free from harmful microorganisms or viruses.

The ventilation system in different zones of the Grand Mosque is carefully regulated to accommodate the varying number and density of visitors. This meticulous control ensures that worshippers experience optimal thermal comfort while also promoting energy efficiency.

The Technical, Operational, and Maintenance Agency at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque plays a critical role in overseeing the intricate electromechanical system of these important religious sites. A dedicated team of highly skilled Saudi engineers and technicians continuously monitors temperature levels, humidity, and overall system performance to ensure worshippers’ utmost comfort and safety. They meticulously manage maintenance orders, strictly adhering to technical guidelines and references, all while maintaining a vigilant focus on security and safety protocols to uphold the sanctity of these sacred spaces.
